After years of analysis there is still a tremendous number of consumers who are unaware of whether you gain something or not from active management of mutual funds. This paper investigates the performance and persistence in active Norwegian mutual funds using a survivorship bias free dataset in the period between 1983 until 2017. The prospect of the paper is to test the hypotheses “Is actively managed mutual funds worth the money – will fund managers be able to find positive alfa?” and in the extension of this the paper also investigates if they are persistent in their performance. The dataset used consists of monthly NAV values for a total of 103 funds. Fund performance is evaluated using Carhart’s (1997) four-factor model as a benchmark model, while the one-factor model and the three-factor model is used for comparisons. I did not find enough significant positive alfa values which makes me reject the null hypothesis which says that fund managers possess superior stock picking skills. Furthermore, I find weak evidence that fund managers possess bad stock picking skills; that they actually choose stocks that underperform compared to benchmark. And none of the active mutual funds had a persistent performance. Any good achievements can be justified by good luck rather than skills, while there are indications that there are negative share picking skills among the managers. I have throughout this paper not found any evidence that indicates that active management beat their benchmark and have a persistent performance, and an investor should choose a passively managed mutual fund if he or she wishes to achieve a high excess return.nb_NO
