Aluminium production is a time-consuming and energy-intensive process, where the consumption of energy accounts for one of the biggest costs in the industry. This master thesis has examined the connection between aluminium and energy commodities such as electricity, natural gas, oil and coal. This thesis has with the help of Engle-Granger’s and Johansen’s cointegration model, as well as a DCC-GARCH model, analysed the relationship between aluminium and the energy commodities just mentioned. Time series of weekly data for six energy commodities from both the spot- and futures market were used for the period October 2010 – February 2018. Engle-Granger’s and Johansen’s cointegration models found evidence of long-term equilibrium in several combinations, but they were not consistent. EEX-ELIX, which is a reference price for large parts of Europe, where the only energy price both models agreed had a long-term equilibrium with aluminium. The DCC-GARCH model gave the thesis possibilities of analysing how market shocks in the energy markets could affect aluminium. The model found significant volatility spillovers effects from WTI oil and Nord Pool. Spillovers from oil where especially visual during the oil crisis. Nord Pool was found to have spillover effects during smaller periods. The electricity price had a higher reaction parameter, but the volatility was less sustained.nb_NO
