The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how the drying of cross laminated timber affects soundproofing. This thesis is based on two eight-storey buildings made of cross laminated timber, that were completed in August 2013. Measurements of sound insulation in the partition walls were done in three residential units on the same floor in both buildings. The measurements were done with the use of handheld sound level meter and pink noise. An inspection of cracks and examination of the doors' properties was conducted, as well as an assessment of whether furnishing and flanking transmission could affect the sound reduction. These measurements and investigations have provided the basis for answering the problem statement. The problem statement is as follows: Can the drying of cross laminated timber lead to cracks that can significantly reduce sound insulation between residential units? It was discovered that air leaking doors affected the sound level in the residential units. The results of the measurements have given high values of the weighted sound reduction index in all partitions, and meet requirements set in the Norwegian standard, despite the air leakage in the doors. Theoretical assessments of the effects of cracks suggest that cracking in cross laminated timber with insulated dry lining does not lead to a noticeable reduction of sound insulation.nb_NO
