The subject of this master thesis is decision making in small businesses and how they decide to establish an online store. Decision making is defined as a conclusion or a decision based on assessments (English Oxford Living Dictionaries 2018). A lot of the trade that was previously carried out in physical stores has gradually shifted to online stores. It is therefore interesting to investigate what lies behind the decision to establish an online store. We chose to look at the interior industry, as they are characterized by strong competition and many new establishments. This has led us to the following thesis question: «How do small businesses make the decision to establish an online store?» Based on the theory of decision making, we have developed a conceptual model that shows how small businesses can use different qualitative and quantitative assessments in their decisions. The model consists of three main phases: assessment of resource and market situation, identification of alternatives and limitation of decision criteria, quantitative analysis and final assessment. We want to increase the understanding of what influences a decision and the connection between the different phases of the decision-making process. The method we have used is a theory driven qualitative case study. We have interviewed ten informants, each of them is CEO and decision maker in their company. The range consisted of small interior stores centrally located in Eastern Norway. The stores were in different parts of the life cycle at the time when the online store was established. The results of our research show that the motivation behind the establishment of online stores is justified by the growth of those who already had physical stores. For the newly established ones, the motivation behind the establishment was a wish for change in the life situation of the informants. The results of our research show that the CEO of the interior stores often uses intuition and gut feeling in the decision of establishing an online store. The decision is made quickly and is often spontaneously, without obtaining information about what is required of resources and capabilities. The CEO first examines what is required after the decision. What part decisions the CEO chooses to investigate depends on what they consider important. The decision-making process in terms of the establishment of an online store is mostly intuitive. Quantitative analysis tools are not used. Real options thinking is used by individuals to evaluate different alternatives and information against their own criteria. The CEO use their personal network in the decision-making process, especially in areas where they have lack of knowledge. Over time, the CEO becomes more rational and increases the use of quantitative analysis tools.nb_NO
