Hospitals are regarded as a vulnerable and closed environment, an indoor environment prioritize before an outdoor environment, an environment where people in vulnerable situations receive help. To many people, such a life situation can be experienced as stressful and many face the feeling of lack of control over their own situation. Studies and research done on outdoor areas at health institutions shows that contact with nature can have a positive effect on people’s physical and mental life and health. This task seeks to find out how to design the New hospital in Drammen an attractive, accessible and health-promoting urban and park environment, for patients, relatives and employees as well as the rest of the population. The aim of the assignment is to prioritize the outdoor environment before the indoor environment, the human in the center and design environments in an environmental psychological perspective, with the vision of a green city hospital as a central role. The New Vestre Viken Hospital project was established as the existing hospital was considered inappropriate and the capacity was insufficient. After long processes and discussions, it was decided that the new district hospital in Vestre Viken would be located on Brakerøya in Drammen, as the area was considered as the best location based on considerations such as a hub and the values of a future-orientated, attractive and accessible hospital, with Focus on creating well-being and environment for patients, relatives and employees. The task area will therefore be about Brakerøya as a transformation area, with the vision of establishing a Fjord park where nature, city and health goes hand in hand. Initially the background information about Brakerøya, Drammen and the hospital is presented, as well as the municipalities’ plans and visions and the project’s situation. The background information maps and discusses the opportunities and challenges, and provides a basis for further development. Furthermore, in the knowledge base, a review of the relationship between nature and health is presented in relation to the establishment of park area in the city and the environmental psychological perspective towards the impact of outdoor areas on patients, relatives and employees at health institutions. The background information and the knowledge base form the basis for the objectives and design principles of the assignment. The thesis presents further opportunity studies of the area’s focus and structure, where different solutions are discussed in relation to the task’s objectives and principles of design. Basic values as available and coherent connections, experience and stay, and a multifunctional urban perspective, characterize the feasibility studies and the final result. The task has resulted in a design based on interdisciplinary goals and values, where the new hospital is located in the urban area, as well as a natural environment, in an environmental psychological perspective focusing on outdoor areas before the interior and human being in the center. Brakerøya has become a hub for health and leisure, and an accessible and attractive place in natural and central surroundings. In conclusion, the project presents a reflection and discussion of the project, as well as how the design proposal responds to the design principles and the basis of the task.nb_NO
