This study addresses the short-term effects from announcement of acquisitions by looking at how these announcements are affecting the stock price for companies on the Oslo Stock Exchange. By studying a short period around the announcement date, I can identify the market's reaction to the acquisition and see if there are certain days that stands out. I also want to look at how different types of acquisitions affect the shareholders return in both the buying and selling company. The different types of acquisitions I have studied is whether the company targeted in the acquisition is a listed or an unlisted company, and the second is if the type of settlement in the transaction affect the market’s reaction to the acquisition. This analysis uses a sample of acquisitions on the Oslo Stock Exchange for the period of 2013-2016. In the sample of data used in the analysis, either the buying or selling company was listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange at the time of the acquisition, and I ended with a sample of 81 acquisitions. To analyze the abnormal return, I have used the market model presented by MacKinlay (1997) in his article, "Event studies for economics and finance". By using several selections of criteria, as well as including the risk-free interest rate in the model, I have tried to isolate the effects of the announcement in the best possible way. In this study, I find that there is a significant abnormal price change for both the buying and selling company with an event window of 20 days prior to 20 days after the announcement of the acquisition, [-20, 20]. For this period, the selling company achieves a significant abnormal price change of 11,93%, while the buying company achieves a significant abnormal price change of 3,49%. Furthermore, I find that it does not matter if the settlement consists of only cash or if it is equity-based, which applies to both the buying and selling company. Finally, my study cannot find sufficient evidence to conclude that there is a significant difference in the abnormal price change when acquiring a listed or an unlisted company.nb_NO
