Blueye Robotics is a company that makes underwater drones for the consumer market. Today, the thruster solution is bought from a third party supplier. This thusters' propeller and motor are used in a self-designed thruster housing integrated in the ROV hull. My task was to develop a new thruster solution with respect to requested performance and metric specifications. The thesis' objective was to specify, build and test a prototype thruster-solution for Explorer P2, the new version of Blueye Robotics underwater drone. The report was meant as a foundation for Blueye Robotics' goal to build their own thruster solution. The development of the design was initiated with looking at metric specifications of the existing thruster housing solution in the Explorer P1 and the T200 thruster from Blue Robotics. Reading supporting literature and research articles about propellers and thrusters was essential to get the needed knowledge to execute the thesis work. In addition to this, an earlier master thesis on the subject was then taken into consideration to map out different factors around thruster design. It was then carried out concepts with the use of different product developing techniques with regard to assembly and production efficiency, both for the prototype and for the design to be integrated in the Explorers' ROV hull. Different foreseen user scenarios were used to create a foundation for the dimensioning calculations, together with the specifications of the chosen electrical motor. The concepts for prototyping were then taken further by making 3D-models in Solidworks and analysing them with finite element analysis (FEA) and flow simulation (CFD). Several of the components interact either direct or indirect with each other, and had to be concurrently adjusted when the design was altered. After a continuously product optimization process the result was a 3D-model ready to be 3D-printed and tested. A bollard pull testing of the thruster was executed in the testing facilities in MCLab (MARINTEK) to test its function and performance, together with revealing strong and weak sides of the design. Three propellers with different pitch was tested to find one that best suited the motor. The power usage, rotation speed, force, current and voltage was mapped. The performance data was used to find different characteristics of the thruster with the three propellers and the significance of the proposed thruster protection on the performance. The new solution generated a thrust of 48,7 N at 678W, 4100 rpm and current 45.5 A. The total weight of the thruster (included the motor) was 851 grams, of the following outside dimensions: length 120mm, front diameter 120mm, rear diameter 108,5 mm. Unit price was 3600,2 NOK.nb_NO
