Aktiv sjøfront : bærekraftig utvikling av Sandefjord sjøfront

Abstract

Opprinnelig oppstod Sandefjord på bakgrunn av beliggenheten ved sjøen med lange tradisjoner innen sjøfart, hvalfangstindustri og badevirksomhet. Sentrumskjernen ble etablert i bakkant av sjøen der den fortsatt ligger.

Sjøfronten domineres i dag av en fergeterminal samt store uutnyttede arealer med potensiale for oppgradering, og mangler essensielle møtepunkter. I tillegg er sentrumskjernen og sjøfronten delt av et stort parkdrag, flere parkeringsarealer og en trafikkert hovedferdselsåre som gir lite sammenheng mellom de to områdene.

Masteroppgavens tema tar for seg bærekraftig sosial utvikling av sjøfronten i Sandefjord sentrum. Målet med oppgaven er å utvikle området til en sosial drivkraft for kommunen. Bakgrunnssteori, historie, analyser og medvirkning har resultert i tre fokuspunkter innen sosial bærekraft; urban rekreasjon, kulturmiljø og kulturarenaer samt seks utviklingsstrategier. Strategiene er benyttet aktivt for å programmere området og gi innhold til løsningsforlaget. Dette innebærer å flytte dagens fergeterminal, omstrukturere infrastrukturen, skape sammenhengende gang- og sykkelveger og områder for sosial interaksjon. Gjennomført spørreundersøkelse , kommunens tanker og ideèr har gitt grunnlag for valg av funksjoner og aktiviteter i området. Løsningsforslaget presenteres i en overordnet skala og fokuserer på å utvikle området i sammenheng med eksisterende bystrukturer. Prinsippielle snitt og illustrasjoner viser tenkt utførelse for å tilgjengeliggjøre og aktivisere sjøfronten. “Aktiv sjøfront” ønsker å være et eksempel på fremtidig utvikling av Sandefjord sjøfront med mennesket og det sosiale i fokus.

Sandefjord originated as a result of its location by the sea with long traditions connected to shipping, whale hunting and spa- facilities. The city center was established behind the waterfront, where it also lies today. The waterfront is currently occupied by a ferry terminal and large unexploited areas with great improvement potential. It also lacks essential meeting points. In addition, the city centre and the waterfront is divided by a large park, several parking areas and a trafficated road which gives little connection between the two areas. This Master thesis addresses a social sustainable development of the waterfront in Sandefjord city centre, and aims to explore its potential of becoming a social meeting point for the municipality. Background theory, history, analysis and participation has resulted in three focus areas within social sustainability; urban recreation, cultural environment and cultural arenas. All this led to six development strategies. The different strategies have been used actively in order to program the area and give substance to the proposal. They include moving the ferry terminal, a reorganization of the infrastructure, creating new pedestrian and cycle paths and areas for social interaction. Conducted survey, municipal thoughts and ideas have founded the choices of functions and activities in the area. The proposal is presented in a large scale and focuses on developing the area in the context of the existing city structures. Sections and illustrations depicts the thoughts on how to facilitate a more active and available waterfront. “Active waterfront” seeks to be an example of the future development of the waterfront in Sandefjord with people and social arenas in focus.
