tydelighet i kritikkens språk.
imot landskapsarkitekturprosjektets ulike bestanddeler.
verket. | nb_NO |
dc.description.abstract | This PhD-thesis is a theoretical contribution to the field of landscape architecture. It
investigates the representation of landscape architecture projects in critiques published in
the review Havekunst, in the period 1920–2010. The argument of Jean-François Lyotard in
«Gestus» (1992), that criticism constitutes the work, is the thesis’ point of departure. The
purpose of the investigation is to shed light on the linguistic expression of the critique and
to analyse and discuss whether and how an aesthetic dimension manifests itself in it. In the dissertation, a distinction between project and work is established. The project is
regarded as the production of a designing landscape architect and consists of three
components: the site, drawing and image, and text. The work is a value-laden appreciation
of the project, as represented through a critique. Hence, a clear language in the critique is
required, in order to facilitate a shared understanding of the work. The critique may both
limit and open the work, but the representation cannot be detached from the thinking about
landscape architecture. As testimony of a process of interpretation in several stages and as a
text that conveys an enshrined set of values, criticism is a particularly valuable source to
understanding the discipline’s set of values. Despite this notion, landscape architecture
texts in general and -critiques in particular have been researched only to a limited extent.
The investigation relies on aesthetical and historically oriented landscape architecture
theory, but it also takes inspiration and theoretical contributions from the fields of aesthetic
philosophy and literature. Close readings and writing as an explorative approach constitute
the dissertation’s method.
Variations in the critique’s forms of expression and rhetorical devices are identified
and discussed against the foil of landscape architecture project’s different components. On
this basis, the understanding of works and of landscape architecture as an aesthetic field are
discussed, while, at the same time, the textual breadth and diversity that Havekunst offers is
shown in the thesis text. The discussion emphasizes the relationship between the actual,
physical reality and representation of this reality in the appreciation of landscape
architecture. Imagination appears to be crucial both for the critic’s experience and her act of
writing, as well as for the reader’s access to the work through the text.
The critiques are widely concerned about the site, but the site is represented and
explained mainly through drawings and images or perceptions that are already worded, and
treated as fixed or unambiguous documentations. Thus, it is imaginations of the site that are
constituent of the works, rather than the sensory qualities of the site as such. This
dissertation, thus, exposes a non-stated tradition, a favouring of objectively documented
qualities above aesthetical qualities of the work. | nb_NO |
