Sammendrag
Denne masteroppgaven i anvendt matematikk behandler kontinuerlige
ii This Master's thesis in applied mathematics treats continuous S-systems and
piecewise continuous S-systems, including local stability analysis of such systems.
S-systems are important in analysis of biochemical systems, and we
describe which steps an analysis of biochemical systems consists of. Using
examples, we illustrate the process of constructing maps and accompanying
continuous S-systems. Then we show that every initial value problem where
the differential equations are a continuous S-system in which all variables are
assumed to be positive and any independent variables are constant, is well
posed. We give an account of theory that gives important methods for use in
local stability analysis. Subsequently we give examples of local stability analysis
of continuous S-systems. MATLAB-code made by the master student
himself is made use of to find critical points and to assess instability and local
asymptotic stability. In the treatment of piecewise continuous S-systems we
define important terms, and we give examples with piecewise continuous
S-systems where we perform local stability analysis. MATLAB-code made
by the master student himself is made use of to analyse variation of normal
components along a wall. We demonstrate that for piecewise continuous
S-systems, different parts of the same wall can be of different type (transparent,
white or black). For one of the piecewise continuous S-systems we
demonstrate a closed trajectory running through every operational domain.
