Første metode viste at fasadene jevnt over er i god forfatning. This thesis addresses a historic brick building from 1921 and highlights the challenges of insulating the exterior walls of this type of buildings. From an energy perspective, exterior insulation would be the most favorable measure but for buildings with ornamental facades and limited eaves, interior insulation must be considered. Interior insulation will change the temperature and moisture conditions of the wall which may affect the damages of the brick facades. The main focus of this thesis is to consider the importance of brick quality and water content in the facades through the thesis problem "In what way can the insulation value of the brick wall be improved without increasing the probability of damages?" Three analytical methods were used to solve the problem: damage analysis of the brick facades, quality testing of bricks and moisture analysis by using the program WUFI 1D. The first method showed that the facades are generally in good condition. Concentrated areas of damages including frost damages were recorded. Bricks taken from interior side of a cellar wall were quality tested. By considering the test results to be representative of the building's facades it was found that frost resistance was not satisfactory with respect to internal insulation. Moisture analysis of the existing situation showed that limited capabilities of the wall to dry out combined with high exposure of wind-driven rain gave the highest water content in the brick. For the insulation cases a water content analysis showed a pattern of increasing water content in the outer parts of the brick facade due to increased insulation thickness. A critical insulation thickness could not be determined on the basis of any of these methods. A comprehensive assessment provided that the walls could be insulated with mineral wool on the interior side with a thickness up to 50 mm without high probability of increased damages. An internal insulation with greater thicknesses was considered to increase the probability of damages. If this option is desirable, the assessment determined that the insulation retrofit must be done in combination with two measures - quality testing of bricks from the exposed facades to be satisfactory for the Norwegian climate, - and reduction of exterior rain exposure with a waterproof plaster solution.no_NO
