Abstract
I dimensjoneringsarbeidet er det valgt å fokusere på to hovedkomponenter;
slik at kjøretøyet tilter. Svingarmene er i hovedsak utformet av to firkantprofiler i aluminium.
holder maksimal akselerasjon i full sving.
andre komponenter blir skadet.
ABSTRACT
In the future there will probably be made even stricter requirements on energy consumption
for transportation of people and freight on public roads. We are in fact forced to consider
alternative methods in the design of vehicles, in order to make them smaller and lighter. Still,
the functionality and comfort of a conventional car has to be maintained to the extent that
consumers actually are willing to accept the changes.
The basic idea behind this concept was originally introduced by Professor Jan Kåre Bøe at
IMT / UMB. The concept is a lightweight 3-wheeled vehicle, with capacity of one adult and
two children, or one adult and equivalent load volume. The vehicle shall have two rear wheels
and one in front, the ability to bank like a motorcycle while cornering, and be approvable as a
trike. The concept has been named "Dolphin Family".
The complete concept will be developed through a series of subprojects, where as this project
assignment's main goal is to investigate, design and construct a proposal for the vehicle's main
frame and rear suspension. Because of time limits and practical reasons, the task is limited not
to specify other parts of the vehicle chassis, such as front suspension, engine, brakes and
powertrain.
The carried out work includes investigation of existing 3-wheel vehicles and related design
principles, drafting and consideration of several proposals, and basis calculations for a
preliminary solution. Probable load cases are identified, and the structure's beams and
materials are selected through systematic reviews. Furthermore, the structural stresses are
analyzed using FEM. The structure is attempted optimized for minimum weight, and then
presented with renderings of a 3D model. Finally, appropriate production methods are
discussed and a rough cost estimate is carried out, all with respect to a prototype.
The final proposed solution is about 3.1 m long and 1.4 m wide, and the structure is based on
an assumed fully loaded vehicle weight of 800 kg. The vehicle can tilt up to 45° while
cornering by using an automatic hydraulic system.
Two main components have been chosen for the detailed constructional work; the frame
structure and the swing arms for the rear suspension.
The frame can be characterised as a platform structure, composed of bent aluminum plates.
The frame is designed to withstand an expected maximum and acceptable load which occurs
when the front wheel hits a bump at full braking. When overloaded, a shear bolt in the front
wheel fork joint is destroyed first, which is then easily repairable.
The weight of the frame is only 39.1 kg (only sheet metal), and thus has a very favorable
weight to strength ratio.
The rear suspension consists of longitudinal swing arms, which is rotated by means of two
hydraulic cylinders. The swing arms are mainly formed by two square aluminum profiles. The
rear suspension can withstand a certain vertical shock loading to the rear wheel while the
vehicle holds maximum acceleration and turning angle. In case of overloads, a changeable rod
acts as a fail-safe element by breaking before other components are harmed.
Remaining components in the proposed solution are not completely specified or calculated,
but the project paper suggests a possibility of using existing solutions, such as wheels and
front fork with shocks from a motorcycle.
A number of assumptions and calculations in this report are characterized by significant levels
of uncertainty. Especially in relation to vehicle handling, load sizes and fatigue. This also
applies in relation to the adaptation of the vehicle's remaining structure, such as the upper
body and interior design.
This thesis has placed most emphasis on background investigation and discussion of design
principles, rather than detailing and design of the final structure. As a result, this report is not a
fully adequate production document. But the paper may offer valuable background material
for further development of Dolphin Family.
