The purpose of this master thesis is to investigate the interaction between the West European markets for oil, gas and electricity. The general theme is cointegration in relation to the present day markets and both historical and future development. Initially the addressed problems and the historical progress are presented. Thereafter the three markets are examined, focusing on market structures and price developments. Then the underlying theory and relevant empirical studies are introduced, with focus on different market theories, market integration and the law of one price. This is the basis for the econometric methods, which then are reviewed. Stationarity with the Dickey-Fuller test and the Johansen test for cointegration are emphasized in this section. In the following part the econometrical tests are applied on selected time series for the three energy markets. The tests show that the three markets are not cointegrated, and that a uniform energy market with a common stochastic trend does not exist. The tests show however, that the markets for oil and gas are cointegrated, and that the law of one price holds. Additionally the oil price seems to be an exogenous variable in relation to the gas price. Finally the results from the econometrical tests are analyzed according to the markets and relevant trends. The characteristics of the three markets which are important to the superior theme are emphasized here. It is discussed whether or not the markets are converging into one single market, or if the future markets will be more independent of each other. Electricity carriers, price indexation of gas contracts, climate policies and substitution are key elements in this discussion.no_NO
