Abstract This thesis has a threefold purpose: Identify costs and revenues that are affected by the establishment of flue gas condensation in district heating systems, quantify the changes through a case study, and develop a general model for the profitability of flue gas condensing heating systems. Flue gas condensation is a technology that makes it possible to utilize the heat energy of the flue gases. By condensing the flue gas, emissions from the plant are reduced while the efficient heating value of the fuel increases. To achieve flue gas condensation in a facility two requirements have to be met: The fuel must have a moisture content between 40 % and 60 %, and the return water temperature in the district heating system must be lower than the condensation point of the flue gas. Return water temperature depends on the energy utilization in the customer sites. By including flue gas condensing technology in a district heating system one changes the project’s profitability. The changes in revenues are minimal because energy sales from the plant will be the same regardless of the chosen production technology. The investment costs and fuel costs will however vary with the project’s technology choices. When flue gas condensation is included in the plant being built in areas where customers have existing hydronic heating systems, additional reconstruction requirements related to customer sites occure. This thesis develops a profitability model for flue gas condensing heating systems in areas where customers are existing customers of district or local heating. As a part of this development, the district heating plant being built at UMB in Ås is studied and analysed. The analysis studies four possible scenarios within the project and the scenarios profitability are studied in terms of sensitivity to changes in energy prices and operating and maintenance costs. The results show that although the project is not profitable at the set rate of return of 6.0 %, it reaches profitability when the set rate of return for normal risk projects is used. The project achieves, under realistic operating and maintenance costs and the distribution of these, profitability when the energy price exceeds 364 NOK / MWh. The calculations use the average weekly rate for the Oslo area in 2013. This is 327 NOK / MWh.The calculations use the average weekly energy price for the Oslo area in 2013. This is 327 NOK/MWh. By studying the outcomes of project profitability through changing different variables it is concluded that the project’s social benefits are greater than the social costs of the project. Hence the set rate of return should be adjusted downwards. Further it is likely that district heating plant with flue gas condensing technology will become more profitable than plants without this technology when energy prices rise as a result of increased energy exchange with Europe.no_NO
