Resultatene viser at natursynet påvirker holdningene for tilrettelegging. Lately there has been an increased political focus on the development of nature based tourism in and around protected areas in Norway. The project PROTOUR “Dynamic management perspectives on tourism development in Norwegian national parks” aims at identifying the interests among various user groups concerning nature based activities and facilitation for visitors within the national parks. Nature based tourism has potential to improve the rural economies as traditional industries such as agriculture and forestry are declining. This study is a contribution to the PROTOUR project and focuses on the attitudes towards facilitation among the rural population in a national park area. The attitudes are analyzed in the light of their nature orientations, and the main objective is to find out if there are relations between nature orientation and quest for facilitation. The study is based on semi-structured interviews with a sample of local inhabitants in northern Gudbrandsdalen, an area also marketed as Nasjonalparkriket (“The National Park Realm”). The results show that nature orientation does affect the attitudes towards facilitation for visitors. Persons with an anthropocentric orientation towards nature, where nature is considered as a resource for human use and pleasure, are positive to facilitation – both in terms of larger and smaller installations. Persons with a non-anthropocentric orientation, where the concern for nature is prioritized over human needs, are also to a certain extent positive to facilitation. They are not, however, positive to facilitation that involves larger installations. The study also reveals another feature that should be considered in this context; the quest for tourism development to sustain the rural community. Persons with this focus are positive to all kinds of facilitation, even though their nature orientation should indicate the opposite attitude. To increase the rural economic wealth it is clear that the attitudes and wishes among the local inhabitants should be implemented in the management strategies. In addition should the government increase the resources available and show a stronger willingness to support local initiatives.no_NO
