The Norwegian horse breeds Fjord horse, Døle horse and the Nordland/lyngen pony are in fierce competition with other imported and specialized horse breeds when it comes to sport and breeding. To strengthen the competitive level in the market for the Norwegian horse breeds, it is suggested too look at a sport/activity for each horse that can be improved through breeding for traits that will be important for the activity, of which the traits of temperament will be important. In 2009 a new test form for the fjord horse were tested on the stallion show, a test for temperamental traits. The aim of this study was to evaluate the temperamental test on the fjord horse, examine which traits that are captured by the test, and look at the performance traits that are important in relation to what the horses are used for. In addition, the improvement potential for the test was analyzed. The video materials, which were analyzed, consisted of 50 stallions. Behavioral variables were recorded and scored. The temperamental test consisted of a handling test (element 1), crossing of bars (element 2), bridge test (element 3), novel object test (element 4) and acid can test (element 5). Only moment 1-3 was taken on for further analysis. The results showed no significant correlations (r <0.01) between element 1-3. A principal component analysis on element 1, element 2 and element 3 showed one underlying factor, factor 1. The variables high head (element 2), high head (element 3) and tripping (element 3) showed all significant values with factor 1 (Pr> ChSq, 0.0008, 0.0009, 0.0017). The elements seem to point in the same direction, and they measure some off the same temperamental traits; stress, irritability, fear, cooperation and dominance. These traits can be detected whit a bridge test, and it will be important to know about these traits in relation to future use of the Norwegian breeds. To have a better basis to say anything about a horse's temperament it will be beneficial to also introduce a horse personality questionnaire in conjunction with the temperamental test. The Norwegian horse breeds are versatile breeds that may have an advantage by being marketed as suitable for use for health purposes and activities associated with riding and use in the mountains. There will be a need for more research into the area to be able to say with certainty which traits are captured by the various temperamental tests and how certain these tests are.
