Abstract
Resultata viste at for timotei vil eit tre-slåttesystem gi høgare EKM enn eit to-slåttesystem. This thesis consists of a literature study and results from an experiment that is part of a project. The literature part gives a review of relevant topics on silage quality, digestion in ruminants, feed intake and milk production. A significant part of the ration for dairy cows consists of silage due to a long indoor feeding period in Norway. A good silage quality is therefore important to achieve a high milk production. There are many factors that affect silage quality, such as harvesting system, harvesting time and botanical composition.
The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of 1) different cutting systems with timothy, 2) perennial ryegrass vs timothy and 3) mix with red clover on feed intake and milk production.
11 silage qualities were produced for this experiment. From this, 5 different treatments were created by mixing cuts within the cutting system and species. The experiment was carried out with 40 NRF cows which were assigned to blocks according to parify, days in milk, body weight and milk yield. Within each block, the cows were distributed among the 5 treatments over 4 periods. The cows had ad libitium accsess to silage from feed troughs that recorded daily silage intake.
The results showed that for timothy, a three-cutting system will give higher feed intake and EKM than a two-cutting system. This was due to harvesting at an earlier stage of development in the three-cutting system, which led to higher digestibility, a higher concentration of crude protein and lower NDF content compared to the two-cutting system. Compared to timothy, ryegrass in this trial did not lead to higher feed intake and milk production. This may be related to the fact that the growing conditions were not optimal for ryegrass. A silage mixture of timothy and clover led to higher feed intake and milk production compared to pure timothy silage. But fat% and protein% in the milk were higher with timothy than for the mixture. It may have come from higher NDF content and NEL uptake with timothy compared to the mixture of timothy and clover. According to previous studies, clover-based silage resulted in higher feed intake and milk production compared to grass-based silage. In this experiment, the mixture of timothy and clover led to a higher feed intake and milk yield than pure clover silage.
