*Fiktivt navn This study is based on translation studies and the translation of “driftsmodellen” in two supermarkets of the SuperMat-chain* “Driftsmodellen” is a model that was presented to all SuperMat-stores wishing that it should be implemented in all stores. The model contains radical changes of the workday and the organization of the store.
The theme of the study is translation theory and what elements of this theory that can help solve the phenomena that has happened in the respective stores. Based on this theory I present the following research question:
“Have SuperMat succeeded with the translation of the model and to what extent have the translator’s translation competence influenced, if any, success?”
The study use theory of hierarchically translation, knowledge transfer tradition, contextualization, decontextualization, adoption and translation competence to help solve the research question.
The data was collected first and foremost during interviews with representatives from the stores relevant for this assignment. The results indicated that the two stores did not copy “driftsmodellen”, but rather used local adjustment to create their own unique model.
The assignment concludes that SuperMat has not succeeded with the translation of the model since none of the two stores have chosen to copy the model. Still, this does not mean that SuperMat have not succeeded with the knowledge transfer of the model. Both stores have experienced success as an effect of the introduction of the model to the stores, but this does not come directly from the “driftsmodell”. This indicated that the translator ́s translation competence has had an impact of the success the store has experienced after the introduction of the model. Rather, it comes from the translator’s competence to do the necessary adjustments to shape the model and make it in to something that is unique for the store, as its own unique unit with different internal and external factors.
